Weekly Homework Assignments
Final Drafts
April 22 – Bring Final Draft to class, and send to me by email for blog.
Chapter 63
Bring Rough Draft to class.
Peer Review Checklist for Research Papers. As you listen to the essay being read, look for these elements:
Introduction:
Can I tell who the intended audience is?
Does the essay open with a good hook?
Can I easily find the thesis statement (Does it introduce topics)?
Is the writing style formal (Try to avoid 1st/2nd Person)
Is there good word variety/concrete nouns/strong verbs
Is the writer’s voice “louder” than the sources?
Body Paragraphs:
Does each body paragraph connect to the thesis statement?
Does each body paragraph include research?
Does each paragraph acknowledge and refute the other side’s opinion?
Is this refutation done graciously?
Conclusion:
Does it remind readers of the topics in your body paragraphs?
Does it repeat and reflect the thesis statement?
Does the conclusion include a soft challenge or a blend of voices – one more quote with your own clear position restated?
Students, bring two drafts home. Edit essay once more. Ask a family member to read it. SEND ME A LINK TO YOUR ESSAY (MAKE IT SHAREABLE).

Chapters 54-55
Find a fun example of a logical fallacy to share with the class (instead of a vocabulary word of the week).
For example, I showed them a picture of a STRAW MAN WALKING A RED HERRING UP A SLIPPERY SLOPE ON THE WAY TO HIS SOCIAL MEDIA COMMENTS SECTION.
Students should choose a TOPIC for the research paper, decide on a strong research question, and compose a working thesis statement. They should also look for 10 sources to research the chosen topic.
For those who are caught up, read Lesson 56 and follow the Writing Workshop recipe on page 239. We'll talk more about this next week.
Chapters 51-53
Complete Activity 1 (page 198) and mentally answer the Activity 2 questions.
BRING YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION AND A LIST OF SOURCES YOU FOUND FOR YOUR RESEARCH PAPER.
BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR WORKING THESIS WITH THE CLASS. We will follow the same equation we learned in unit 4.
Concession + Opinion + Reasons = Thesis Statement.

Chapters 48-50
Complete the “topic workup sheet” for your chosen topic. I handed these out in class and sent them by email to those who were absent.
Follow Activity 3 (Lesson 49) to craft the research question you’ll use for your research paper. Find three sources for the topic you chose in lesson 49. For each, write down its author, title, and where you located the source. If the source is online, write down its URL. Read Lessons 51-53.

We will not be writing our final essays until January, but I’d like you to start next semester with a solid thesis and outline. It doesn’t have to look exactly like the model in the book, but I want you to feel confident about the points you are covering and be ready to answer counterarguments!
When we get back from winter break, we’ll spend time working on writing an attention-grabber for our introduction and constructing our body paragraphs and conclusion.
Take some time to look at the final checklist and Unit Assessment on pages 180-182.
We will be picking up next semester with Lessons 44-46.
Have a wonderful break, and don't forget to send me your intended audience, your thesis statements, outline points, and questions!
Lessons 42-45
Make adjustments to your thesis/concession based on peer feedback.
Complete Activity 3 (page 162). This will help you anticipate your opponent’s counter-arguments and prepare appropriate responses.
Complete Activity 2 (page 165). Write a rebuttal to each of the counterarguments. You should have 3 arguments AGAINST YOUR POSITION and 3 one- or two-sentence rebuttals next to each.
We will evaluate these arguments/rebuttals next week. Over break I’d encourage you to read ahead and test your opinions on family members. Encourage them to argue your points with you.
.Lessons 37-39
Bring in a vocab word of the week to share with the class!
Read through Activities 1-3 on pages 152-153. This brainstorming exercise will be your homework. Its purpose is to get you thinking about topics that are important to you.
Choose your topic for your persuasive essay, and work on your thesis. Follow activities 1-2. We will proofread your thesis using the discussion questions (Activity 3 on page 156) in class next week. We will write this paper in January.

Read “Shades of Being Human” (Lesson 34). Complete Activity 3 Essay Critique, and bring your answers to discuss together.
Complete Lesson 5 (Activity 3) on pages 140-141. This exercise will give you practice identifying the 3 parts of a persuasive essay. You can mark these in your book, and be ready to discuss them next week in class. I’d also like you to read Lesson 36 carefully so you can understand these 3 parts, especially “the concession” (which might be a new term).

Lessons 31-33
Add a vocabulary word to your wall, and bring it to class. Your words have been fantastic this semester!!
Students, I'd like you to follow the same color-coding method we practiced in class yesterday. Take your first draft of the article response you wrote on lowering the minimum voting age to 16, and mark it up as follows:
1. Purple - Underline your main opinion statement.
2. Blue - Circle any words or phrases that reveal, or push your opinion on the issue. (Watch for sneaky adverbs like “obviously, rightly…”!!) You want to sound neutral in the beginning so you don't lose readers who disagree with you!
3. Orange - Put a box around the name of the person or group that each paragraph discusses.
4. Green – Underline sentences that identify what YOUR POSITION is on the controversy. Remember to be diplomatic!
5. Red – Underline sentences that explain why you have this particular opinion. What are the reasons for your particular opinion?
6. Pink – Check for grammar issues (misplaced modifiers, pronoun disagreement, wrong verb forms, wrong verb tenses).
Complete Activity 2 on page 123-124. Read through the outline you will be following for your final article critique. You have made such good progress on this assignment that I have decided to just have you write your final drafts this week!
Important! As soon as you are done writing your article critique, PLEASE SEND IT TO ME BY EMAIL SO I CAN EDIT IT ONLINE AND RETURN IT TO YOU BEFORE NEXT WEEK. ALSO, BRING BOTH YOUR COLOR-CODED RESPONSES AND YOUR COMPLETED ARTICLE CRITIQUE TO CLASS NEXT WEEK. I WILL BE EVALUATING THIS ASSIGNMENT USING THE UNIT ASSESSMENT ON PAGES 125-126 IN YOUR BOOK.
