How to Love School

Student Essay by Claire Davis

New school supplies, specifically crayons, have a certain smell about them. The smell evokes excitement and makes you look forward to the start of the semester. But crayons lose their newness and don’t smell quite as good halfway through the year. While crayons and new school supplies can help make school exciting, this thrill only lasts for the first few weeks. Then reality hits, and we get bogged down with all the papers and projects. But would you believe that school can actually be enjoyed longer than just the first few weeks? Here are three ways I have discovered to make school fun long after the new crayon smell wears off.

It's never a chore to do something that's fun, so why not view school as a form of recreation instead of as a chore? Find creative ways to engage in your subjects! Maybe that's using colorful pens to color code your notes or doing cartwheels in between flashcards. For me, I love teaching my younger siblings just about anything, and I would sometimes have them sit and listen to me talk about whatever I was learning, from ATP energy to Latin conjugations. This helped me familiarize myself with the material sparking my siblings’ curiosity. Set goals for yourself, grab some “students,” and make it into a game!
Bad grades can be a downer for any student, so achieving better grades will help you love school! That’s easier said than done. The truth is you have to work hard and study! When you are good at something, you tend to enjoy it more, whether it’s a hobby, a sport, or a school subject. In order to be good at a subject you have to practice (study). Studying doesn’t have to be painful, but it does require effort. One way to help you be able to study better is to get lots of sleep and have a good routine. Experiment and find out which methods of studying help you best and take advantage of them. Are you a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner? What study tools do you get the most out of?

Lastly, and most importantly, is remembering to glorify God in everything you do. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says to do all things to the glory of God. (ESV Bible, 1 Corinthians, 10.31) That includes school! Starting off your morning with scripture can help you get into a God-focused mindset for the day. Next, dig deep into each subject and find God’s grandeur and artistry. Especially in science! Biology is so intricate and everything works so well together from food webs and trophic levels to the physiology of the human body, to the way the periodic table is arranged.

School can be fun and educational! I personally am infatuated with it (when I have a positive attitude)! Like anyone, I can also be stressed and upset with it, but ultimately I love observing school through the lens of awe and wonder of what God has given us to learn!
