Cats Versus Dogs

Student Persuasive Essay by Isaac Wood

When someone asks you what the best pet is, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Although there are a lot of animals that could have come to your mind, you most likely answered dogs, and after all, why not? The majority of pet owners in the US prefer dogs over other pets such as cats. This is because of how friendly and companionable dogs are renowned to be. However, dogs are not the only pets with these qualities. Cats, despite their reputation for being reclusive, can be equally loving companions. Cats are far more relaxed and comfortable in small spaces when compared to dogs, and despite their reputation of being stand-offish creatures, many of them are very cuddly animals that love physical affection. Although dogs may be preferred due to positive public perception, cats are equally fitting pets; matching dogs in many of their supposed pet advantages such as having a playful nature, being friendly companions, and even surpassing them in ease of care.

Many people prefer dogs over cats due to their playful, energetic nature. Many dogs do fit this description quite well, but so can cats! Cats enjoy a multitude of playful activities including chasing strings, play fighting with toys, and for certain cats, even fetching appropriately sized toy balls! Although not every cat enjoys fetch, the same can be said for some dogs. And playing fetch is not the only signature dog activity that many cats enjoy. Cats can be trained to walk on a harness and leash, although it can be a bit slower than walking a dog. Due to their short legs, they are not as fast as dogs, and because of their often curious nature, they will usually take time to explore. This is not something every cat will want to take part in, but those that do make for enjoyable walking companions.

Another reason people favor dogs is their friendly temperaments. Many dogs are adored for being amazing family pets, great with kids, and non-aggressive towards strangers. This however is a stereotype that not every dog falls into, especially certain breeds. Likewise, there is a stereotype that cats are aloof and often grumpy. Although this is true for certain cats, it is by no means the majority. Cats are naturally social animals and often bond very closely with their humans. Many cats enjoy snuggles and laps, especially if they are well socialized, and therefore make great family pets.

One of the disadvantages of owning a dog is the labor they require to be healthy. They need to be walked at least once a day, they need to have enough room to move around comfortably, and they need to be potty trained to live inside. Although cats do require some effort and space to keep, the amount of both required is significantly less than dogs. Cats can live quite comfortably in just a small apartment, and as long as you have a clean litter box, they will naturally not mess up the house. Although they love the ability to go outside and explore, you can keep a cat as a pet with considerably fewer resources.

Despite how popular dogs are as pets, cats can live up to dogs' reputations as great pets that are playful, friendly and convenient. Dogs are great pets and might be the best choice for certain families, however, cats should not be neglected just because of the stereotypes surrounding them. If you’re considering getting a cat, go to your local animal shelter and ask for specific cat traits you want in a companion. Whether that’s a friendly cat, a playful cat, or a cat that just wants to snuggle. If you want a pet, a cat might just be what you’re looking for.
